FILL - Application Procedures
To participate as a FILL intern, a student must:
- have completed all core courses and any other requirements required by your School to be eligible for an internship/practicum;
- be in "good standing" at San Jose State University (SJSU) School of Library & Information Science, the UCLA Department of Information Studies, University of North Texas Department of Library and Information Sciences or submit an application (cover letter, resume, and written statement);
- be enrolled in the appropriate internship course
- SJSU =LIBR 294 for 3 units
- UCLA = INFO STD 498
- UNT = SLIS 5090.701
- and complete an interview with a prospective library.
FILL interns may not:
- complete an internship/practicum at a library where they are currently employed;
- nor complete more than 2 FILL internships/practica during an academic year
Application Process
- Review the available FILL internship opportunities here
- Select 3 potential FILL sites from list
- Email your application to Tanya Novak, FILL Coordinator: tnovak [at] socallibraries [dot] org AND to your School’s Coordinator, Professor Bill Fisher Bill [dot] Fisher [at] sjsu [dot] edu (SJSU), Keri Botello kbotello [at] ucla [dot] edu (UCLA), or Janet Hilbun Janet [dot] Hilbun [at] unt [dot] edu (UNT)
- The application packet should include:
- Cover letter, describes your background and qualifications (not to exceed one page)
- Resume (not to exceed one page)
- Written statement indicating what you hope to gain from the FILL experience (not to exceed one page)
- List your 3 potential FILL sites in order of preference in the body of the email
- Your application will be checked to ensure that that you are in “good standing” (e.g., enrolled; have requisite number of credits; maintains B average; etc.)
- Your application will be evaluated by SCLC and a tentative FILL assignment is made. Unlike other internships/practica do NOT contact the library until you have received notification from SCLC.
- FILL assignments are based on a combination of the following criteria:
- Quality of application/written statements
- Interest in previously unassigned FILL sites
- Demonstrated interest in acquiring new professional skills in a new library setting
- Needs of the Library
- Once the assignment is made, student’s application is forwarded to the selected library
- Contact the library and arrange an interview
- FILL appointment made with concurrence of both library and student
- Enroll in internship/practicum course
- SCLC Headquarters will send you the forms needed by SCLC
- Internship/practicum proceeds according to library school requirements
- Notify SCLC Headquarters when internship/practicum is near completion so that SCLC staff can close out your file.
- Payments are made twice a month by SCLC directly to the student. Checks are mailed to the address provided in your application.
